Hi friends, how are you all doing? Sorry that I haven’t been really active here. I have been doing so much more outside of WordPress, and I honestly feel bad about how I have neglected my blog.
Aside from my work life and having to spend more time cooking now that I am a vegetarian (it is just easier to cook than to look for a vegetarian restaurant), I have not been very productive lately. Because I always feel so tired after work, I end up binge watching Netflix until I get sleepy. And because of this, I have not written or even read for a while.
Which got me thinking…
Why is reading better than watching TV? I know there are thousands of articles out there debating about why one is better than the other. Personally, even though I know that both involve us consuming data and information presented to us, I do honestly feel like I learn more from reading than from watching TV and videos, or even from listening to audiobooks or podcasts.
But why is it so? It is not like I read books that are super informative. Even when I am reading fiction, I still feel like I have gained a lot more knowledge than, say, watching a similar movie.
Could it be that we learn better when our minds are less stimulated? I am sure we can all agree that movies and videos are more stimulating, what with all the sound and visual effects. They are definitely more entertaining, but do all these entertainment distract us from the actual data that is being presented to us?
Or could it be that when we read, we consume at our own pace? We can go as fast or as slow as we want, and we can pause to think about what we have just read. Whereas when we watch a movie, we are being fed with constant information, and before we are able to digest what we have just seen or heard, we are forced to move on to the next set of information. Of course, we can always pause a movie, but realistically, how many of us do so? Most of the time, we cannot wait to get to the next scene, with our brains wanting to be further stimulated.
I suppose it could be all that, and more. Personally, I know that I have a lot more to gain from reading than from other form of consumption.
I would love to hear your thoughts. Which do you prefer, and which do you feel benefit you more?
